Yeovil Town Football Club
club history
Background: -

Nicknamed "The Glovers"; Yeovil Town F.C was formed back in 1895, originally founded as the "Yeovil Casuals F.C". In 1920, they merged with another local football club, "Petters Untied", to become Yeovil Town Football Club.

Previous to 1990, Yeovil played at the notorious 'Huish ground'. This ground was famous because of its significant sloping pitch, and other teams thoroughly disliked playing on it due to this. However, the pitch always created a roaring, unique atmosphere, as it produced exciting, high-scoring games. In 1990, the club moved to a brand new ground, 'Huish Park', in the suburbs of Yeovil, in Somerset. It was an emotional time for all concerned with the club, as the old 'Huish ground' held years of history and memories. The clubs current ground,
'Huish Park', currently holds around 9,000 people, with one of the best set of facilities at non-league level. You can always expect more than 2,500 people to attend each home match, making Yeovil one of the best-supported non-league clubs in the country. This average attendance also beats some teams one or two divisions higher than The Glovers are.

Yeovil now play in the 'Nationwide Conference League', four divisions below the Premier League. Promotion from this division would mean a place in division 3, next season. Yeovil's current innovative style of football produces very exciting matches for the fans and the neutral spectators. This almost paid off last season when they missed out on promotion by only 6 points, finishing second to big-budget team Rushden & Diamonds, whose chairman is also the owner of the shoe company 'Dr Martins'. This season, Yeovil got off to a below average start, but have in recent weeks, picked up their form which got them so nearly promoted last season.

The Glovers current manager is ex-Latvian boss, Gary Johnson. Johnson took over at the beginning of this season, from Colin Addison, who resigned from his post at the end of previous one. Johnson boasts a successful football career, with playing spells at Fulham, Watford and Cambridge United. He is also believed to be the first English player to transfer to a Swedish club. This was when moved to FC Malmo in the late 1970's.

The 2001/2002 Yeovil Town F.C first-team squad: -

The current Yeovil squad includes several faces that played for Premier League clubs. Midfielder Andy Turner played for Tottenham Hotspur for four years from 1992-1996. During this time, Turner made 20 appearances for the club, including three goals. At that time, he became the youngest player to play in a Premier League game at only 17 years old.
Another Yeovil midfielder, Nick Crittenden, played for Premier League club Chelsea back in 1997. He made three first-team appearances under the famous Italian ex-player Gianluca Vialli, who was manager at the time.
Central defender Terry Skiverton also had a spell with Chelsea, previous to his Yeovil career. Right-back Adam Lockwood began his career at Leeds United, before moving to second division Reading, where he was a regular in the first team.

Last year they beat Colchester United 5-1 and Blackpool 1-0, in the first and second round respectively, with both teams being in division 3, a league above Yeovil. This earned them a third round tie against Bolton Wanderers, then first division, now in the Premier League. More than 3,000 Yeovil fans made the nearly five-hour journey up to Lancashire, seeing an extremely exciting and tense match. Yeovil more than held their own through the majority of the game, taking the lead in the first half. But the now-famous Bolton striker Michael Ricketts scored in injury time at the end of the game to win the match, 2-1 to Bolton.

Yeovil in the F.A Cup: -

Throughout their 107 years of existence, Yeovil Town F.C has traditionally been known as the "Giant Killers of Non-League football." This is due to their frequently good runs in the main cup competition in England, the F.A Cup. Their most famous F.A Cup victory came in 1949, when they beat then the top team in the country Sunderland, four divisions above Yeovil. In recent years, Yeovil's good F.A Cup runs have earned them matches with teams such as Arsenal and Fulham.
